Institute for Museum and Library
Services
The Institute is an independent agency created by
the Museum and Library Services Act of 1996 (P.L.
104-208). The Act moves federal library programs from
the Department of Education and combines them with
the museum programs of the former Institute of Museum
Services. The Institute provides distinct programs of
support for libraries and museums and also encourages
partnership between museums and libraries. IMLS
consists of the Office of Museum Services and the
Office of Library Services. IMLS supports all types
of museums, including aquariums, arboretums and
botanical gardens, art museums, youth museums,
general museums, historic houses and sites, history
museums, nature centers, natural history and
anthropology museums, planetariums, science and
technology centers, specialized museums, and
zoological parks.http://www.imls.gov
